Flood coat basics

  • Plan two coats on wood. Wood Magazine: "A single thick coat can result in trapped bubbles as air rises out of the wood pores, so plan to apply two coats. A thin first coat allows the air to escape."
  • Respect the per-coat limit. Many tabletop epoxies self-level at about 1/8 in. East Coast Resin says no more than 3/16 in per flood coat; TotalBoat TableTop allows 1/4 in per coat.
  • Mind the window. Recoat times are product-specific, for example 4–10 h between flood coats for East Coast Resin, or at least 3 h between 1/4 in layers for TotalBoat TableTop.
  • Quick sanity check. 1 US gallon is 231 cubic inches, which covers about 12.8 sq ft at 1/8 in. TotalBoat's guide uses 12 sq ft per gallon at 1/8 in as a rule of thumb.
